Lend Lease BCSC Exhibition Stand

The challenge

Exhibitions are inherently unsustainable with large volumes of waste being created in the build, running and disposal of the stands.

With the existing Lend Lease stand coming to its natural end of life, our challenge was to create a truly sustainable exhibition stand. This was to be the visual embodiment of the Lend Lease brand with the flexibility to be used at numerous UK and European exhibitions over a three-year period.

The brief was to ensure that the Lend Lease stand stood out as a market leader in sustainable design, and met the following challenges:

Flexibility of size

Although the BCSC stand space for 2008 was 6m x 6m with a height restriction of 6m, exhibitions in Cannes have a maximum height restriction of 2.5m and the stand area could be 10m x 3m. Our proposal had to be flexible for such needs.

Lifespan

The stand had to have a minimum lifespan of three years.

Visitor traffic

We had to ensure visitors were encouraged and attracted onto the stand and we allowed a free flow of visitor traffic.

Reflection of the brand

The stand image had to reflect a classic contemporary, calm and quirky look, and the subtle impact of the Lend Lease brand.

Showcase schemes

The stand needed to showcase key Lend Lease schemes, promote the Lend Lease offering and educate visitors about Lend Lease's sustainability commitment.

Sourcing of materials

The origin of materials had to be known along with consideration for their recycled content and reuse or recyclability potential

The solution

B. sustainable, with partners Fieldwork, encapsulated the requirements of the brief by designing a stand that would be equally impactful in a variety of exhibition spaces.

The materials and elements used were chosen so that only minor cosmetic repair would be required over the lifespan of the stand. The natural warmth and calming attributes of wood were utilised to enhance the simplicity of the design.

Height and space was given to the company logo, to enable crisp and clear branding. Elements such as the recycled plastic bottle tables and wall bubbles made from nutshells, gave quirkiness to the stand.

Lend Lease schemes were 'framed' to give an intriguing perspective to the visuals and were placed with messages informing visitors of the materials used and of the company's commitment to sustainability.

B. sustainable commissioned dcarbon8 to measure the full carbon impact of the stand to include all materials used, energy from lighting plus travel of the builders and employees manning the stand. This measurement totalled 2.17 tonnes CO2e and was offset through the purchase of carbon credits – it also provided a benchmark against which the impact of future exhibitions may be measured.

The new stand fulfilled our requirements perfectly – it communicated our key messages clearly and succinctly, encouraging visitors to engage with our staff and enquire about opportunities. It functioned as a meeting space with up to four meetings occurring simultaneously, generating transactional business for our key assets. It clearly reflected the Lend Lease brand, our values and commitment to sustainability, which was not evident in other exhibits
